Our planet’s third largest oil deposit Athabasca Oil Sands is located in Fort McMurray, Northern Canada and is the size of England. People from all over the world come there for a well-payed job and settle down in the apartments crammed next to it. They work 12-hour days in the oil fields and some days the smell of chemicals rising in the air is dizzying.
One litre of oil produces hundreds of litres of toxic liquids and millions of litres of them spill in to the soil daily. No one wants to think about the air they’re breathing but everyone is afraid of oil prices collapsing. In order to survive, one must be blind to the universal truth. Our western expectations concerning the standard of living are based on the balance of horror of oil-reliant life and are further sustained by the cycle of hypocrisy.
