Los Reyes

Technically commendable and smoothly rolling Los Reyesand its sympathetic characters provide a welcome breather to enjoy between busy daily routines.

Located in the capital of Chile, Los Reyes is one of the largest skateparks in the country. It is also the home of two dog pals. Shaggy and already somewhat greyish Football is not too fussy about what he accepts as a toy. At times he has fun with an empty soda bottle, sometimes a mere stone is his most precious treasure. Younger and more agile Chola loves balls. His favourite pastime is to bring a tennis ball to the edge of the skate pool and push it down to the bottom where it keeps rolling around.

There is no need for narration as the documentary follows the life of this sweet and unique dog duo. Every now and then, the camera focuses on a sleeping, furry muzzle and nearly dozes off on this soothing sight, until a wider angle pulls us back to observe the world in which people play only supporting roles. The camera is not interested in the skateboarders of the park, but on the soundtrack we hear their intimate discussions about family, school and drugs. These conversations spice up the film nicely, but, instead of them being in the spotlight, the dialogue constitutes only a flowing, aural backdrop for the dogs’ afternoon naps.
